Roundup 76: Favorite Dog Articles & Videos of the Week
You know what the best part about blogging about dogs is? The ability to write about something that isn’t even remotely related to politics…Oh wait, I take that back. Did you hear about the ridiculous ‘pit bull’ ban Montreal passed earlier this week?
Another ban on dogs based on looks alone, regardless of their history. Didn’t we already prove that these bans don’t improve safety, and that breed is not a good indicator when it comes to predicting dog bites? If you find these breed restrictions as ridiculous as I do check out this list to find out how you can help.
But in other news there’s been a lot of great dog stories to come out this week. From the right to make end of life decisions as comfortable as possible for us & our pets to what dogs really see when they watch television, here’s some of my favorite dog articles of the week.

The Dying Pet’s Bill of Rights | Paw Curious
Beautiful piece about end of life care for pets, and the realization that we have the right to make those decisions in a way that’s right for us. When it comes to euthanasia there are different options available, yet few of us even aware that those options exist. As an owner you’re the one making those tough end of life decisions, and you have the right to make those decisions as pain free as possible.
Montreal Fumbles the Ball With Breed-Specific Dog Ban | A Humane Nation
Montreal adopted a breed-specific ban earlier this week that will make it illegal to acquire a ‘pit bull’ or ‘pit bull mix’ dog starting October 3. The law also requires owners of ‘pit bull’ type dogs to apply for a special permit, muzzle their dogs in public, and keep them on a 4 foot leash at all times. Breed specific laws target dogs based on looks alone, regardless of their personality or history.
However you parse it, this new law is absolutely going to lead to countless adoptable, friendly and loving dogs being killed, which is exactly why breed discriminatory laws like this are so harmful and why so many communities have recently opted to reject them. – Montreal Pit Bull Ban Gives Government Authority to Kill Dogs ‘with Tax Payer Dollars
Here’s One Way Your Dog Is a Better Learner Than You | Time
A recent study found that dogs are better than humans or chimps at ignoring bad instructions & eliminating unnecessary steps when it comes to solving a problem.
Dogs don’t wear pants — and it’s hard to know how things would work out if they tried. But one thing is clear: if dogs did wear pants, they would use either a belt or suspenders, but definitely not both.
5 Reasons My Dogs Never Step Foot in Dog Parks | Dachshund Nola
Here’s a great list of reasons why many of us are uncomfortable bringing our dogs to the dog park. When it comes to your own dog(s) the choice is yours, but remember that those sorts of environments aren’t right for every dog.
Here’s What Dogs See When They Watch Television | The Bark
I watch quite a few nature programs on TV and I can tell you that Laika certainly seems to ‘enjoy’ them, or at least show great interest in them. Here’s a look at what dogs see (and hear) when watching TV and why some of them are much more interested in it than others.
