It’s the weekend once again which means it’s a nice time to sit back, relax, and catch up on some of this weeks great reading. Here are my picks for this weeks favorite dog articles, deals, and videos. Have a great weekend, a happy Easter, and enjoy this awesome spring weather.

Favorite Dog Articles of the Week

What You Don’t Know About Your Dog’s Nostrils
New study finds that dogs might show a bias between their nostrils. Research suggests our dogs investigate with their nostril when scents are associated with more intense emotions such as fear and aggression. While more familiar scents tend to be investigated with the left nostril.

12 Things I Used to Do as a Veterinarian I Wouldn’t Be Caught Dead Doing Today
I think we all think back on the past and wish we could do certain things differently. Take a look back on this veterinarian’s 35 year career as he shares what he did back in the beginning versus what he does now. A nice reminder for all of us to take a step back and look at how we’ve each changed over time.

How to Keep Your Dog Calm in Public
When we got out in public Laika has a tendency to whine and make what I call the “sorrow howl” when she feels she’s not getting enough attention. She continues to do it because it works – strangers come right up to her and ask “what’s wrong?” and give her lots of nice pets. Here’s some great tips for keeping your dog calm in public places.

18 Loving Animals Who Befriended Soldiers Overseas
See some of the animals (like the adorable puppy in the featured image) military men and women befriended while serving overseas. In some lucky cases the soldiers were even able to adopt their new furry friends.

Once Upon a Time
Have you ever had trouble walking your dog? Imagine walking two dogs at 6:30 am on a Monday morning… One of the dogs decides she just has to check something out…Looking for a laugh? I won’t spoil everything – but if you’re looking for a good laugh read this story.

17 Dos and Dont’s of Running With Your Dog
Jogging with your dog is an awesome way to exercise together. I don’t think you’ll find a more agreeable running partner than a dog – they’re always willing to go and do a great job keeping us motivated. Here are some great tips on making jogging with your dog a normal, healthy part of your exercise routine.

What It’s Like to Adopt an Older Dog
An intimate look into one families experience adopting an 8 year old Cocker Spaniel named Rufio – a ‘little spaniel with sad eyes and a big personality.’

The first time we gave him a bone, he had no idea what to do with it. He’d evidently never had one before. He just sat there with it in his mouth, wiggling his little tail stub and acting incredibly proud of his new meaty-tasting thing.

“The biggest surprise about having a small dog for the first time? They’re so low to the ground, they get incredibly dirty easily and often; Rufio’s the world’s angriest Swiffer. “

Favorite Dog Videos of the Week

I think I’ve got a new trick lined up for Laika.

Zoey’s rescue story is sure to brighten your day. She was rescued from a hoarding situation and is now living the good life with her new forever family.

This is a fascinating (and depressing) look at what some dogs with separation anxiety do when left alone. You can watch the full episode of Dogs: Their Secret Lives here.

I love that article by Dr. Becker. While it’s probably tough to reflect back on all of those things, I think it’s important that he allowed himself to grow and change to provide better care for pets. Amazing how much things change over time.

I am going to have to read that article on keeping your dog calm in public. Gretel is an anxious put but she pretty much keeps to herself. Chester is really happy but he yips and barks at everyone to get attention. I really wish that he wouldn’t. Maybe that article will help.

Chester sounds an awful lot like Laika in that regard – it works so well on strangers no wonder she keeps doing it 🙂

Dogs have preferences with their nostrils?? Fascinating….I’m going to be watching Cindyu from now on, whenever she’s sniffing something…

I wonder if that dog can teach Rolo how to load the dishwasher? What a great help that would be!

I love seeing evolving practices and opinions as well. I hate to cite politics but I’m always reminded of John Kerry & how he was accused of being a ‘flip flopper.’ I’d hate to think what I’d be like if I didn’t continue to learn, grow, and heavens forbid change my practices or opinions throughout life.

Luke used to climb right into the dishwasher when he was a puppy….I should have turned that behavior into an opportunity! Isn’t it everyone’s dream that the pets would help with the housework? 🙂
